Contours of Tribal Literature: The Fictional World of Narayan

The roots of Indian literature can be traced back to Adivasi literature. Indian tribal literature which espouses the rich traditions of the country has witnessed and has been subjected to centuries of marginalisation and cultural upsurges. Tribal literature in India as in other countries has always been delivered orally. However, postcolonial era has witnessed written versions coming into vogue, with education and the might of the pen extended to the adivasis too. The introduction of printing has impacted favourably on tribal literature that faced the threat of erasure at the onset of multifarious cultures. Narayan’s fictional world is replete with the stories of forced displacement, discrimination, alienation, and violation of basic human rights.
