Inauguration of“ English Association 2019-20” Report The activities of “English Association 2019-20” were formally launched on 17 July 2019 by Shri. S. Kalesh, Malayalam poet of renown. The programme began with a song of prayer by Joquiline Elizabeth George of III B.A., and the welcome speech by Liza Alex Ummen of II M.A. In his inaugural address, Shri. S. Kalesh expressed his regret that society now fails to encourage emerging poets; only the prominent poets were ever acknowledged. Dr. Mathew P. John, the Principal of the college, who presided over the meeting, spoke about the necessity of mastering the English language in this modern world of cut-throat competition. A cash prize of Rs 5000, awarded to the highest scorer in the University examination for the Common Course English Paper, was handed over to Ms Alisha Sali of I M.A. The prize was a one-time scholarship instituted as a Golden Jubilee project of the Department. Dr. Tom Thomas, faculty of the Department, was presented a memento on being conferred the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in English. Prizes were also distributed to the winners of the Book Review competition held in connection with observation of Reading Day. There was a recital by Arjun Raveendran of II M.A.,of poems he had composed himself. Prof. Elizabeth John, Head of the Department, and Aneena Jalal of III B.A., as student representative, rendered felicitations. The function ended with the vote of thanks by Rohit S. Nair of II B.A. The freshers of I B.A. and I M.A. were given a rousing welcome during the afternoon session. Prof. Siby John, teacher-in-charge of the Association, coordinated the programme.
